Certified Coatings Company (CCC), Muehlhan Industrial Services’ subsidiary based in Fairfield, California, announced that it has been awarded the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge (RSR) painting and repair project by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), following a competitive procurement process. CCC’s bid of $107,469,339 was the lowest of five competing bids.
This award represents the single largest contract in Certified Coatings Company’s history and reflects the company’s deep expertise in large-scale, technically demanding bridge coating and preservation work. The project is scheduled to be completed in two years, and the scope includes a full abrasive blast and protective coating application across the bridge’s critical navigation spans, as well as structural towers, a significant and complex undertaking on one of the most prominent bridge structures in the northern San Francisco Bay Area.
The double-deck cantilever Richmond-San Rafael Bridge (officially the John Francis McCarthy Memorial Bridge) carries Interstate 580 across San Pablo Bay, connecting Richmond in the East Bay to San Rafael in Marin County. Originally opened in 1956, it is one of the most heavily traveled and structurally complex bridges in California, serving tens of thousands of commuters and commercial users daily. Protecting its steel superstructure through high-performance surface coatings is essential to its longevity and continued service to the region.
CCC, Muehlhan’s industrial coatings subsidiary, has a well-established relationship with this bridge, having previously completed two separate multimillion-dollar projects on the RSR.
