The Lego Group today announced a massive $400 million expansion in Monterrey, Mexico. The project will add 62,000 square meters, increase total production capacity by 35% and create additional packing and warehousing capacity. It will also add 1,300 jobs by 2029. The facility currently has some 7,300 employees.
The Lego Group has continued to expand its Monterrey factory since it opened in 2008. Chief Operating Officer Carsten Rasmussen said the company has a “long-standing commitment to Mexico” and said the plant will play a vital role in the company’s global manufacturing network. He said the investment sets up Lego for continued growth in the Americas region and will help the plastic brick maker meet growing demand.
Work on the new production areas is scheduled to begin in early 2027 and be completed by 2029. This expansion is in addition to a separate packaging and warehousing project announced in 2023. That effort, which added 59,000 square meters and 900 jobs, was completed earlier this year.
The Monterrey factory handles all aspects of Lego manufacturing and packaging, including molding Lego elements (bricks), piece processing and decoration as well as packing boxes. Nancy Sánchez, general manager of the Monterrey factory and senior VP of Americas manufacturing at the Lego Group, said the company operates a “flexible and resilient manufacturing network that’s designed to make products close to our major markets. In the Americas, our Monterrey factory primarily serves customers across the region.”
The company couldn't provide specific information on the automation or technology that will be used to help boost production. However, Sánchez said, "The project will incorporate the advanced manufacturing, logistics and automation technologies used in Lego Manufacturing sites around the world." She added, "The investment reflects our continued commitment to innovation and world-class manufacturing in Nuevo León."
Each Lego brick is molded with incredible accuracy, about the width of a hair (0.005 mm), to ensure it retains the company’s patented “clutch power.”
After the project, the facility will span 210,080 square meters, sitting on 87 hectares.
The company is also investing more than $1.5 billion to build a factory and distribution center in Virginia. Both facilities are on track to open in 2027, according to the company.
Last month, Lego reported significant year-over-year gains for the first half of 2026. Revenue grew 26% and consumer sales grew 22% as the company outpaced the global toy market, which market-research and consumer-behavior analytics company Circana reported up 14% for the first half of 2026.
Finally, Lego Group is known for adding some unique design elements to its projects. For example, earlier this year, Lego opened a global manufacturing innovation center in Denmark with a 25‑tonne red 2x4 LEGO brick installation. So, what’s the plan for Monterrey?
“Our factories around the world feature design elements that both tie the site to the specific location and the global LEGO community. This includes many big LEGO builds that help to create a playful and inspiring workplace for our colleagues,” Sánchez told IEN. “So there will be something, but you'll have to wait and see what it is."
