PA Plant Closes, Idling 280 Workers

The modular homes company has operated since 1984, but is filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

LIVERPOOL, Pa. (AP) — A modular homes company has filed for bankruptcy and is closing its plant in central Pennsylvania, idling 280 workers.

The (Sunbury) Daily Item (says Excel Homes decision to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy is forcing it to close plants in Maine, New York, Virginia as well as the plant in Liverpool, about 25 miles north of Harrisburg.

The company has operated since 1984.

The company says in a statement that the bankruptcy was exacerbated by lease terminations at several manufacturing facilities, which forced the company to liquidate and sell off its assets.

The layoffs were effective May 13.
