HelloFresh Accused of Exploiting Monkey Labor for Coconut Milk

PETA said the company knew for years about monkey abuse.

PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has accused another food retailer of exploiting forced monkey labor for coconut milk.

The group accused HelloFresh, a subscription meal service, of knowing for years about monkey abuse in the Thai coconut industry, but refusing to change suppliers.

In a statement obtained by CBS News, HelloFresh said it had received written assurances that no monkeys were involved in its coconut harvesting.

"HelloFresh strictly condemns any use of monkey labor in its supply chain…,” the company said.

HelloFresh is not the first retailer to face scrutiny over coconut products tied to forced monkey labor.

Costco, Walmart, Target and other companies have stopped carrying products from Thailand-based brands like Chaokoh.

PETA said it recently concluded its third investigation in Thailand and confirmed that “rampant abuse of primates is still going unchecked.”
