World’s Largest Floating Wind Farm Produces First Power

It has a planned system capacity of 88 megawatts.

Petroleum refining company Equinor announced that its floating wind farm, Hywind Tampen, produced its first power.

Considered the largest floating offshore wind farm, it has a planned system capacity of 88 megawatts.

Equinor said it delivered the power to the Gullfaks oil and gas field in the North Sea.

The project is approximately 87 miles off the coast of Norway and ranges in depths from 260 to 300 meters.

The wind farm consists of 11 turbines, with seven expected to come on stream in 2022.

The remaining four will be installed next year.

Equinor said the wind farm would meet 35% of the electricity demand of two Gullfaks and Snorre oil fields.

As a result, the company expects to cut 200,000 tons of CO2 emissions from the fields annually.
