Nearly 1 million total vehicle thefts were reported in 2021 as thieves looked to cash in on historically high used car prices.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau's annual “Hot Wheels” vehicle theft report, trucks from two automakers topped the list.
NICB said full-size pickup trucks from Ford and Chevy were the most stolen last year, with nearly 100,000 combined reports.
The Honda Civic and Accord rounded out the rest of the top four, with more than 60,000 reported stolen in 2021.
Toyota Camry, GMC full-size pickups, Nissan Altima, Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee and Toyota Corolla all made the top ten.
Automakers have been updating their anti-theft technology. Ford recently partnered with ADT to launch its Canopy system.
Still, rising used car prices and supply chain issues have made for lucrative car theft opportunities and made the crime more common.
