Bird Laying Off Nearly a Quarter of Employees

The electric scooter startup is streamlining and consolidating.

Micromobility company Bird is laying off a significant portion of its workforce, according to multiple reports.

Layoffs.fyi first reported the news and Bird later confirmed to TechCrunch it would cut 23% of its staff.

The electric scooter rental startup employs some 600 people, which means 138 will find themselves without a job.

Some layoffs have already taken place and affect positions ranging from new hires to senior managers.

Bird told TechCrunch macroeconomic trends put the company on a path that requires it to reduce cost structure, allowing the company to expand.

Bird offers transportation services in over 350 communities worldwide.

In May, TechCrunch reported Bird planned to β€œstreamline and consolidate its resourcing against its core business.”

Bird also laid off 30% of its employees, about 406 workers, in March of 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
