In late 2018, a Michigan factory made headlines for being the source of a horrifying leak.
Electro-Plating Services in Madison Heights was determined to be the source of a bright green ooze that was spilling onto Interstate 696
The plant had been closed down in 2016 for mismanagement of industrial waste.
To date, the U.S. EPA has reportedly invested $3.1 million in cleanup at the site.
But it wasn’t until February of 2022 that the Madison Heights City Council voted to demolish the contaminated buildings.
The demo is due to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, covered by grants from the county and the Mich. Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.
The plant’s ex-owner, Gary Sayers, had illegally dumped chemicals into a hand-dug pit in the factory’s basement, which leached into the ground and created the foul goo.
Sayers was sentenced to a year in federal prison in 2019 and ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution.
