VW, BMW on Opposite Ends of 2021 Sales

One had its lowest sales in a decade, the other hit record deliveries.

Volkswagen disclosed it experienced its lowest sales figures in a decade at 8.9 million deliveries in 2021, according to Reuters

The German automaker also said it expects unpredictable supply chain conditions in the first half of 2022. 

Volkswagenโ€™s brand dropped 8.1% in sales to slightly under 4.9 million units. 

The biggest sales drop equaled 14.8% in China, but the battery-electric vehicle sales quadrupled. 

Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 5.1% of Volkswagenโ€™s deliveries which doubled last yearโ€™s figure. 

On the other end of the spectrum, BMWโ€™s deliveries reached a record 2.21 million vehicles from its brand. 

Simultaneously, BMW passed Daimlerโ€™s Mercedes-Benz sales to claim the title of premium carmaker with the most vehicles sold worldwide for the first time in five years. 

Volkswagen posted 13% growth in North America while Mercedes-Benz and BMW saw .4% and 19.5% growth in the U.S., respectively.
