Worker Dies in Accident at Smithfield Foods

A forklift caused "a substantial collapse of storage shelving."

On Saturday night, 33-year-old Israel Benitez died as a result of a forklift accident.

According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Benitez was working in the freezer area at the company's meat packing plant in Crete, Nebraska.

A forklift caused "a substantial collapse of storage shelving," fatally injuring Benitez.

A company spokesperson wouldn't confirm if the worker was driving the forklift.

However, according to KLKN-TV, Benitez had worked as a forklift driver at Smithfield for the past year.

The accident occurred in the facility's distribution facility and shipments from that area were suspended.

According to local authorities, it took 13 rescue personnel four to five hours to recover Benitez from underneath the wreckage.

The company said it is providing support to those affected by the accident.
