Richmond, Virginia-based Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods is recalling approximately 18,296 pounds of ready-to-eat, deli-sliced meat and poultry products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The products in question were produced and packaged between September 14 and October 3 and shipped to retail locations in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
The problem was discovered on October 4 when the Food Safety Inspection Service received notification from that the manufacturer about possible issues. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
Eating food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune system and pregnant women and their newborns. Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.
