HOULTON, MAINE (AP) — U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King of Maine say the federal government is providing $1.6 million to assist in the construction of a food-processing plant in Houlton.
The 12,000-square-foot facility in the Houlton Industrial Park is expected to manufacture 4 million pounds of laboratory research food each year.
The food for laboratory mice will be used by research labs in California and Maine, including Jackson Lab in Ellsworth and Bar Harbor.
The project was spearheaded through the regional planning efforts led by the Southern Aroostook Development Corporation. The funding was awarded through the U.S. Economic Development Administration and is expected to create 17 new jobs.
