MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The Marquette Board of Light and Power has approved spending up $2.9 million to address noise and vibrations from a power station that went online in 2017 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The Mining Journal reports the Marquette Energy Center in Marquette Township was projected to cost around $65 million to build, but ended up costing $62 million. Initially, Board of Light and Power officials had hoped to spend the excess money on capital improvement projects.
However, shortly after operations began at the facility, complaints started coming in by nearby residents about high- and low-frequency sounds as well as vibrations.
Following the complaints, Board of Light and Power staff worked to review data about the facility. A study found that facility's walls and engine hall roof were factors in the noise.
