TRENTON, Mich. (AP) — A former industrial site in southeastern Michigan may be eligible for cleanup funding under the federal Superfund program.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday proposed adding part of the McLouth Steel plant grounds in Trenton to the National Priorities List, which includes the nation's most serious uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites.
The plant operated from about 1950 until 1995.
The property is divided into two sections. The southern portion is proposed for funding to clean up or remove waste liquids, sludges and materials containing asbestos and PCBs. Other work would include demolishing structures and preventing stormwater flow to the Detroit River.
A final decision on the McLouth site will be made after a 60-day public comment period.
The Superfund's goal is to make polluted sites suitable for redevelopment.
