Company Breaks Ground on $1.7B Steel Mill in Kentucky

The plant will be able to produce 1.2 million tons of steel plates each year.

On Oct. 23, Nucor broke ground on a $1.7 billion steel plate manufacturing mill in Kentucky.

The mill is scheduled to open in 2022, create 400 full-time jobs, and employ up to 1,500 contractors during construction.

The 1.5 million-square-foot operation will add 1.2 million tons of annual capacity for steel plate production.

The average annual compensation will be $72,000. The new mill will have openings for engineers, equipment operators, production specialists and safety technicians.

Nucor and its affiliates employ some 2,000 people at numerous facilities in Kentucky.

In March 2019, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority approved up to $30 million in tax incentives.

To earn the rewards, the company must invest $1.36 billion, create and maintain 400 Kentucky-resident, full-time jobs across 15 years, and pay an average of $45 per hour, plus benefits.

Kentucky’s primary metals industry includes more than 220 facilities that employ more than 25,000 people.
