Poultry processor Perdue Farms reportedly plans to cut nearly 300 jobs at a plant in Southwest Indiana.

The company indicated in a filing with state officials that it would eliminate a second shift at the facility in Washington, Indiana, effective Oct. 10, which would result in the loss of 293 jobs.

Perdue officials told Bloomberg in a statement that cutting the shift was ā€œnecessary to achieve operational efficiencies.ā€

ā€œChanges in consumer demand, decreasing turkey flocks, and how we produce and supply our products have impacted the Washington operations in recent years,ā€ the company wrote in the emailed statement.

Turkey production in the U.S., the report noted, slipped to its lowest level in three decades last year amid challenges related to the avian influenza outbreak, rising inflation, and a shift toward other meats.
