Kroger Grocery Stores are recalling its private label frozen berries because they might be contaminated with hepatitis A The 16 and 48-ounce packages of frozen Private Selection Triple Berry Medley and Blackberries were also sent to Ralphs, Fry's, Fred Meyer and other grocery store chains.
Kroger announced Friday that it has removed the berries from store shelves, and that customers who have them at home should not eat them. Hepatitis A, a contagious liver disease, may cause fatigue, stomach pain and jaundice. It can last a few weeks or several months and can cause liver failure in rare cases.
The Food and Drug Administration discovered the contamination as a part of an ongoing frozen berry sampling assignment. They're currently working with the provider of the berries and continuing to investigate to determine whether there are other implicated products.
At this time, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are not aware of any cases of hepatitis A linked to the consumption of the berries.
