Former Coal Exec Arrested for Alleged Role in Bribery Scheme

Bribes were paid to officials in order to receive about $143 million in coal contracts.

A former coal company executive was arrested for his role in an alleged scheme to bribe Egyptian government officials.

Charles Hunter Hobson, a former vice president for an unnamed coal company in Pennsylvania, faces a seven-count indictment.

U.S. prosecutors said the scheme involved paying bribes to Egyptian government officials with contract connections with Al Nasr Company for Coke and Chemicals.

The bribes were paid to Al Nasr officials in order to receive about $143 million in coal contracts for Hobson’s company.

Charges include two counts of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and two counts of money laundering.

Other charges are one count of conspiracy to violate the FCPA, one count of conspiracy to launder money and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Hobson faces up to five years in prison for each bribery-related charge and up to 20 years for each of the charges involving money laundering and wire fraud.
