Steel producer Nucor Corporation announced plans to expand its Towers & Structures manufacturing operations in Crawfordsville, Indiana. The company expects the $105 million project to create up to 100 jobs by the end of 2029, subject to the finalization of local incentives.

The expansion will add 125,000 square feet to the facility that began production in 2025, leveraging the same automation, straight-line production and hot-dip galvanizing operations as its original operation. The development will also allow Nucor to increase production of engineered utility structures that support electrification initiatives, including grid hardening, renewable energy projects and building a nationwide network of EV charging stations.

Nucor expects to break ground on the expansion in the first quarter of 2027 and begin hiring for new positions mid-2027, adding to its team of 328 workers.

“The expansion will help us meet strong demand for utility poles and other infrastructure resulting from significant investments by our electric utility customers to modernize the grid and expand generation to meet our nation’s growing power needs,” Nucor Chair and CEO Leon Topalian said. “We appreciate the support we have received from state and local officials in Indiana, including Governor Braun, the Indiana Office of Commerce, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and the Montgomery County Council and Board of Commissioners.”

Nucor Towers & Structures was formed in 2022 following Nucor’s acquisition of Summit Utility Structures LLC, which operated an existing production facility in Pennsylvania. The company subsequently built new Towers & Structures facilities in Alabama and Indiana and is currently constructing another facility in Utah.

The project marks Nucor’s fifth major investment in Indiana in recent years, totaling $597.5 million. In addition to its initial $115 million Towers & Structures facility investment announced in 2023, the company added a $290 million modernization investment at its sheet mill operations in Crawfordsville in 2022, invested $28.5 million to build an insulated metal panel production facility in Waterloo and announced a $59 million investment in its Vulcraft division in St. Joe in August. The expansions account for 400 new jobs.

Headquartered in North Carolina, Nucor employs approximately 2,600 teammates at more than a dozen locations across Indiana, including Nucor Steel Indiana, the company’s first sheet mill, which began production in 1989.
