CHAPIN, S.C. (AP) — A bankrupt firearms distributor in South Carolina says it will lay off more than 170 workers and close its plant in Chapin by August.
The State reports Ellett Brothers made the announcement Tuesday, a day after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware, where its parent company, United Sporting, is based.
The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce says United Sporting's chief restructuring officer, Dalton Edgecomb, sent a notice about the layoffs to employees June 7. The notice said the first round of layoffs was to occur June 10, but it's unclear if that happened. Human Resources Director Grace Brickle declined to comment Tuesday.
A complete closure is expected by Aug. 5.
The 86-year-old company's financial collapse, according to the bankruptcy filing, was exacerbated by declining sales.
