CENTERTON, IND. (AP) — Crews have begun demolishing an old coal-fired power plant that was shuttered three years ago in south-central Indiana.
Indianapolis Power & Light Co. had operated four coal-powered units at its Eagle Valley Generating Station until 2016.
IPL spokesman Fred Mills says crews began decommissioning those old units in early January at the site about five miles north of Martinsville.
Mills tells The Herald-Times the demolition work will continue until mid-year, and three towering brick smokestacks will be the last to come down.
Environmental remediation will be needed to address the plant's legacy of burning coal since the 1940s.
That work will include working with state regulators to clean up the plant's coal ash pond.
IPL completed work last year on a new natural gas-powered plant at the Eagle Valley site.
