Canning Plant Fined $177K After Worker Struck by Forklift

An investigation revealed two repeat and three serious safety violations at Seneca Foods' Wisconsin plant.

A Wisconsin packaged produce factory has been fined more than $177,000 after an employee was struck and seriously injured by a forklift.

OSHA said a 60-year-old seasonal employee was hit this past November as she walked toward a pallet to label products for shipping.

An investigation found that the forklift operator did not look in the direction they were heading.

The incident occurred at New York-based Seneca Foods’ facility in Ripon, Wisconsin, which cans vegetables for Libby’s and several other brands.

The investigation led to the fines for two repeat and three serious safety violations, including forklift training and machine safety procedures.

OSHA also found that in September, another employee broke a finger when it was caught in machinery that the company didn’t lockout.

OSHA cited Seneca for similar lockout violations at its Gillett, Wisconsin, plant in 2019.
