On Sept. 30, CF Industries announced a $41.4 million investment at the world’s largest nitrogen fertilizer complex.
The investment will help the company retain 487 jobs while creating seven new direct jobs with an average salary of $100,000.
According to Louisiana Economic Development, the project will also result in 24 new indirect jobs.
The site is located on 1,400 acres in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, making it the largest production facility in the world.
The plant includes six ammonia plants, five urea plants, four nitric acid plants, three urea ammonium nitrate plants and a diesel exhaust fluid plant. CF Industries makes nitrogen products used in fertilizer, emissions abatement and other industrial applications.
CF Industries will use the investment to increase its industrial-grade nitric acid concentration from 60% to 65% in the Nitric Acid No. 4 plant, which produces about 600,000 tons each year. The company also plans to add an air chiller, more product storage and new rail car and truck loading.
The company is expected to use Louisiana’s Industrial Tax Exemption Program for the expansion.
According to Louisiana Economic Development, the program provides a renewable 80% property tax abatement for five-year terms for manufacturers that meet capital investment goals.
The new project follows a $2.1 billion expansion completed by CF Industries in 2016. It was the largest single capital investment project in Ascension Parish history. The 2016 project exceeded obligations to the State of Louisiana and created nearly 50% more new jobs than projected.
The facility uses five major natural gas pipelines and multiple modes of transportation in Ascension Parish, which helps serve a global customers on every continent. The site ships product to customers via the NuStar ammonia pipeline, rail, truck barge (river and ocean), and deep-water vessel.
Based in Deerfield, Illinois, the company operates nine nitrogen facilities in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.
