Barracks to be Among Largest 3D-Printed Structures

They will measure about 5,700 square feet each.

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and the U.S. Army’s Installation Management Command are partnering to build three 3D-printed barracks at Ft. Bliss, TX.

The development is a part of DIU’s Construction Scale Additive Manufacturing project.

The project will use the Vulcan construction system from ICON, the company responsible for a 2,000-square-foot home known as House Zero.

The barracks will measure about 5,700 square feet each and DIU claims they will be the largest 3D-printed structures in the Western Hemisphere.

They will also serve as the first 3D-printed structures that comply with the Department of Defense’s Unified Facilities Criteria for additive concrete construction.

Lt. Gen. Doug Gabram said the project reduces planning time, saves labor costs and increases the speed of construction of future facilities.

In 2021, ICON and the Texas Military Department partnered to design and 3D print training barracks that could house up to 72 soldiers.
