Workstations
Description
Workstations are terminals or personal computers developed for scientific or technical applications. Workstations are connected to a LAN (local areas network) and they run multi-user operating systems. Workstations share information with other machines. Certain workstations are developed for a use in a single specific application. Unlike dumb terminals, workstations can include installed applications and a hard drive which means they can be utilized independently of a server. Whereas low-end workstations are similar in capability to high-end PCs, the high-end ones are akin to mini computers. Workstations are obtainable with a range of processors and operating systems. Workstations provide RAM (random access memory) with separate external and internal caches; they can also include Flash memory. Computer workstations have a range of resolution, display, and user interface options. Workstations can support ECC (Error Checking and Correction) memory, which is a server-like feature providing protection from soft errors.
Types
The various types of workstations are:
Stand alone modular workstations
Clean room workstations
Electrostatic discharge workstations
Computer industry workstations
Mobile computer workstations
Industrial workstations
Portable workstations
Manual workstations
Ergonomic workstations
Specifications
The specifications for workstations include:
Advantages
Some of the advantages of using workstations include:
More flexibility
Better multimedia performance i.e., high resolution image editing, video/audio editing, and gaming
Load is spread throughout the workstations
Fewer server requirements
Ideal for poor network connections
Facilitates multiprocessing
Hardware components can be independently upgraded
Applications
Workstations have a broad range of applications. Workstations find application in point of sale (POS) systems, medical imaging, software development, graphic design, computer aided manufacturing (CAM), and computer aided design (CAD).
