Radios
Description
Radios are communication devices used to transmit and receive signals through radio waves. The main purpose of radio is to convey information from one place to another through any media using wireless technology. A radio consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The sound waves are converted into electric signals through a microphone. These electrical signals are mixed with a carrier wave called modulation which is then transmitted over long distances through an antenna. In the receiver, these waves are received via a receiving antenna and the signal is demodulated. The resulting signal is fed to a loudspeaker which reproduces the original sound wave.
Types
Based on their technology, some radios are classified as follows:
Digital Audio Broadcasting radios or DAB radios use advanced technology of distributing audio signals in digital forms.
Ham radios or amateur radios are used where you can communicate with different people using different frequencies
Internet radios are online radios where radio can be received via the broadband facility or Wi-fi technology from any part of the world
Satellite radios possess superior audio quality as digital signals through a satellite are used
Advantages
The main advantages of radios are:
Communication during relief operation
DAB radios have better sound quality and can be received over more areas compared to analogue radios. Tuning is also easier as the frequency information can be stored and recalled by just touching a button.
Applications
In today’s information world, radio plays an important role in communication and has some of the following applications:
Citizens band radios are mainly used by truckers for two way communication
Hand held radios are used for interpersonal communications
Ham radios are used to communicate with one another through wireless technology
Portable radios allows us to hear music placed in garden, or moved out to beach and park
