Handles

Description

Handles are an attachment to, or part of, an object which can be used or moved by hand. The designs of different types of handles involve substantial ergonomic issues. Some of the materials used for making handles include stainless steel, brass and aluminum. Handles are available in various sizes. Length and height are some of the important measurements required for designing handles.  Industrial handles are components that perform a function by the manipulation of a hand. They are used in machines and metal cabinets. Lever handles are loaded with spring which enables it to come back to its original position after use. Pull out carrying handles are used in instrument cases.

There are three universal requirements for designing handles:

• Sufficiently small circumference for permitting the hands or hand to surround handles
• Sufficient length for permitting the hands or hand to grip handles
• Sufficient strength for supporting the object

Other requirements include:

• A coating or sheath on the handle which offers friction against the hand
• Sufficient circumference for distributing the force safely and comfortably over the hand
• Design to prevent unwanted access
