Chillers
Description
Chillers are machines, which remove heat from one element by absorption refrigeration cycle or by vapor compression cycle, and transfer them to another element i.e., water or ambient air. They are a kind of heat transfer equipment. The components of chiller are compressor, temperature controller, reservoir and recirculating pump. Various types of refrigerants are used in these machines such as water, glycol and thin oil for cooling process. The reservoir is filled with circulating fluid (water, ethylene glycol) and the plumbing is provided between chiller and application. The chiller functions are regulated by a controller. The chiller is programmed to suit individual needs and when this is done, it provides a stable temperature, pressure and flow. An internal strainer prevents the entry of harmful particles.
Types
Chillers are classified as follows:
Absorption chillers
Mechanical compression chillers (centrifugal, reciprocating, screw chillers)
Air cooled chillers
Water cooled chillers
Evaporative condensed chillers
Recirculating chillers
Portable chillers
For indoor installation and operation, water cooled chillers are preferred but for outdoors either air cooled chillers or evaporative condensed chillers are suitable.
Advantages
The advantages of using chillers are:
Applications
Chillers are used in many industrial applications and manufacturing environment to increase productivity by cooling the equipment. Chillers are the main component of air conditioning systems for large buildings and provide comfortable environment by cooling or dehumidification. They are used in various applications such as backups, constructions, emergencies, turn around, testing and repairs. Sophisticated chillers are used to cool ozone generators-ray machines, laser equipment, printing machines, plastic vacuum machines etc. Chillers are main component of spindle as they extend the life term by cooling process.
