Wireless and Worker Safety
Leslie Baker
Vice President, Manufacturing Industry Segment, Nextel Communications

With regard to the role of wireless in worker safety, Nextel helps businesses in all situations, routine or extreme.

Routine Should Be:

Equipment is manufactured with Telemetry capabilities onboard. Telemetry is the ability to monitor -- and potentially adjust -- machine function remotely (can be wired or wireless).

Tech staff, whether campus-based or field service workers, carry GPS-enabled handsets equipped with basic computing capabilities. Devices of this type -- such as rugged phones -- provide robust A-GPS capabilities and a java platform When a device malfunctions, an alert is triggered and sent to the manufacturer and/or service provider (for example: is about to fail, overheats, runs low on power, has RPMs too high, or almost any other measurable criteria are met).

Barcode scanning or manual input captures inventory used on-site and transmits to the system. Devices of this type -- such as the Symbol PSM20i -- capture time spent on-site by each staff member for use in billing or time management. The system can cross-reference GPS location information with street address, automatically calculating time spent onsite and sending into payroll or billing/invoicing systems as appropriate

Extreme Could Be:

In the event of a business outage, communication is critical and managers/supervisors need to be able to quickly organize employees, customers, suppliers, first responders. Nextel is unique in its ability to ensure communications continuity as part of a company's overall business continuity plan. If the company needs to evacuate in an emergency, it can quickly locate all employees. "Man-down" functionality available from Nextel and partners could send an alert out and with a precise location of an emergency or security incident.

Also, Nationwide Direct Connect(SM), the coast-to-coast walkie-talkie feature built into every Nextel handset, is key to communicating when other methods fail. It allows you to keep your human communications flow uninterrupted! When public cellular networks get overloaded or are down, Direct Connect is independent of the public phone system and continues to work. Reach employees and emergency teams and get right through with no setup time, no wait, no voicemail tag.
