Wastewater Treatment Helps Preserve Easter Island

Famous for its unique collection of giant stone heads, Chile’s Easter Island is also the site of a new wastewater treatment plant from ADI Systems, helping to preserve the island's sensitive environment.

The new plant, at Hanga Roa Hotel, is actually the second ADI treatment plant on the Island -- for two years an existing plant has operated successfully at the luxury resort Hotel Explora. Design of the new system is underway and it will be operational for the 2009-2010 tourist season.

Quality Treatment Preserves Unique Environment

ADI uses its ADI-MBR technology, which has a proven track record for producing high quality wastewater. The Hanga Roa plant will provide treated wastewater of such high quality that it can be discharged directly to a local stream.Another benefit of the system is its compact size, occupying a small footprint.

Chile’s Isla de Pascua, or Easter Island, is a small volcanic outcrop in the remote South Pacific. The popular tourist destination, noted for a long-lost civilization that scattered giant carved heads across the island, has a perfect climate and beautiful landscapes. Environmental protection of this remote location is critical.

The island’s sensitive environment and limited fresh water resources present a challenge to locals and to the tourism industry. Now ADI-MBR technology is helping islanders to preserve the environment while continuing to welcome tourists.
