IEN: How do custom projects drive the direction of research and development?
Geriak: Our R & D plan is more affected by market trends, specification from trade groups, and what novel new raw materials are introduced for the market. Now Garland has a large range of ESD products and systems that we would tailor to the need of the customer's end use. The specified system can be based on thickness need, chemical attack, body voltage generation limits, color, decorative look, longevity, moisture emissions, cleanroom requirements, gloss, and performance.
IEN: What are the major trends in the materials sector today?
Geriak: Trends are more related to the changing of industrial standards as developed by the ESD EOS association, for example, evolution to standards in the electronic industry. As components become more sensitive to static discharge, the floor must have lower and lower BVG values. Garland Floor currently offers the broadest product line with the lowest BVG in the industry.
