IEN: Describe the major security concerns facing industry. How can they be addressed?
Dunn: In the access control world, it's still the same: controlling unauthorized people from getting into areas they should not be in. Integration is the major challenge for all developers of access control systems. As the security threats rise, so does the demand for technology to keep pace. Our newest systems are built in an open architecture so that data can be passed among multiple systems simultaneously. This provides convenience for the client and efficiency in the system. Since all systems are going digital, data exchange is becoming the most important factor when considering which system might best meet a client's needs.
IEN: Where are strides being made?
Dunn: Development and deployment of more browser-based/intranet systems. Our Presidio system provides for secure access to the system from anywhere in the world and utilizes the latest Microsoft-based tools to provide for easier deployment in client-networked environments. Improvements to data encryption have allowed for systems to be deployed in network environments without threatening the IT security.
IEN: What innovations are in store for users in security equipment and systems, software, training, and other areas?
Dunn: In addition to our web/browser-based software system, we now routinely are being requested to bring in wireless technology. The wireless solution has come a long way over the past year or so and, coupled with newer networking architecture and networkable controllers, can provide clients with a way to minimize the old wiring schemes of the past that were more costly to deploy. Improvements in biometric technologies and improved affordability have also helped clients seeking more secure identification means to be able to embrace a "cardless" solution.
These are all important improvements in that they provide for lower cost and more productive solutions. Security departments no longer need to be tied to their desks when events can be sent to cell phones or PDAs. Systems such as ours can follow the user allowing for greater use and less impact on their time, their most valuable resource. This is how the web will play a major role in the future of security solutions.
