Q & A with Mark Sanders, Superfeet

IEN: What are the major machine and worker safety issues facing industry?

Sanders: Based on the information that we receive from the occupational health professionals that we do business with, the biggest issue facing industry is finding ways to maintain a healthy "aging" workforce. The average age of a worker in America is now 45+. These employees are still required to perform the same physical tasks of a much younger workforce. Consequently, doctors are witnessing an increase in musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) such as back fatigue, knee pain, and foot problems. One of the most common foot pathologies is Plantar Fasciitis. This very painful condition results in a tender heel and arch, making it difficult to walk without pain or discomfort.

IEN: How can they be addressed?

Sanders: The most cost-effective and primary treatment for Plantar Fasciitis is use of an orthotic support within a good pair of shoes. This is also a great preventative solution for this foot disorder and knee and back pain as well. Good foot orthotics are available over the counter and costs range between $20-$40. The key feature to look for in a good orthotic is a firm, non-compressible material. The device must support and control the skeletal motion of the foot.

IEN: Where are strides being made: In ease of integration? Flexibility and scalability? Safety management? Personal injury prevention?

Sanders: Many companies are looking to find solutions to MSDs in the workplace. Occupational health, safety, and ergonomic professionals are working together to find ways of minimizing the effects of age on the working population. Superfeet, an OTC orthotics company, has completed several pilot studies with industrial and service-oriented facilities. The studies are actually a monitored evaluation designed to measure the effectiveness of orthotics. The results have been remarkable with over 70% of the respondents claiming an improvement in lower extremity discomfort.

IEN: To what extent can companies integrate safety systems into other industrial systems?

Sanders: As a solution to MSDs, foot orthotics can be cost-effectivly dispensed to an entire workforce for a fraction of the cost of just one injury claim.
