New Radio Units Provide Reliable Remote Vehicle Control

HED, Inc. introduces a new high technology Radio Remote series for OEM applications with 11 mW 2.4 GHz Spread Spectrum Frequency Hopping Direct Sequence (SSFHDS) transceivers. This technology enables these interference-tolerant units to provide very reliable remote control of mobile equipment functions.

The new series can operate at an average maximum range of 3,000 feet without an FCC license, and are license free in practically all countries.

Choose from units with a 0°C to +60°C range and -40°C to +85°C range. Integral antennas inside both the remote and the equipment-mounted transceivers enclosure inhibit vandalism.

One selection from this series is a shoulder strap (belly pack) remote unit having two proportional, long life, dual axes joysticks to control four function axes in the "on-site" operation mode and control four different function axes in the "travel" mode. An additional proportional input controlled by the transmitter-mounted potentiometer commands the auxiliary tool functions, with the tool direction set by a toggle switch.

The transmitter resends the status every 0.8 seconds if there is no operator input (changes are instantly sent). For enhanced reliability and safety, the receiver can detect shorts or opens on the input wiring and uses Check Sum for receiver verification, a robust software design and unique ID code.

The Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) rechargeable battery gives eight hours of continuous operation. Intermittent operation results in multishift battery life. If no function is activated for five minutes, an intelligent battery saver circuit turns off the transmitter. To monitor transmitter battery condition, a tricolor LED shows green for adequate charge, orange for 30+ minutes left, and red for 15 minutes left.

The wall plug powered Smart Charger provides a rapid charge in less than two hours for a full recharge, and will not overcharge even a partially discharged battery. A pushbutton on the charger initiates a discharge/charge cycle to inhibit development of "NiCad memory." (A 12 V automotive Smart Charger is also available.) The CXA sealed connector on the side of the transmitter provides completely weatherproof charging.

The equipment-mounted receiver has a fully integrated housing with a fiberglass reinforced (FRP) NEMA-4 enclosure designed with stainless steel hardware. The cover-securing screws and the hinge hardware are all outside the sealing gasket footprint and do not penetrate to the interior of the enclosure to insure retaining the NEMA 4 rating. Enclosure mounting holes are to NEMA/JIC standards.

The 12 VDC nominal receiver unit has 14 each 2.5 Amp PWM outputs protected against overload, short to battery, short to ground, and back EMF spikes as well as two On/Off outputs with the same ratings and protection. If correct transmitted data is not received within every 1.6 seconds all outputs turn off.

The unit has diagnostic LEDs for each output as well as power supply and communication verification.
