New Guide for Portable Rechargeable Cells and Batteries -- General and Specifications

Safety requirements are covered in NEMA ANSI C18.2, Part 2 for Portable Rechargeable Cells and Batteries -- Safety Standard, a separate document.

According to Ramesh Shah, chairman of the ANSI C18.2 subcommittee, this publication applies to portable rechargeable, or secondary, cells and batteries based on nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and lithium-ion electrochemical systems, which include rechargeable batteries interchangeable with primary batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V). Industries that use these products include cameras, toys, and portable computers.

"The standard contains general information, standardized performance and mechanical tests, specification sheets, and all safety tests and requirements," Shah said. "This edition adds consumer product acceptance procedures, such as clarification of rated capacity, cycle life, and application charge capacity."

The contents and scope of ANSI C18.2M, Part 1-2007 may be viewed, or a hardcopy or electronic copy purchased for $75.00 by visiting NEMA''s Website.
