April 25, 2008—Rosslyn, VA: The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published two standards related to MG 1-2006, Revision 1-2007 Motors and Generators. MG 1 Condensed Information Guide for General Purpose Industrial AC Small and Medium Squirrel-Cage Induction Motor Standards and General Specification for Consultants, Industrial and Municipal: NEMA Premium Efficiency Electric Motors (600 V or Less) have been updated to mirror the updated contents of the most recent MG 1 edition.
MG 1 Condensed summarizes the motors included in NEMA Standards Publication MG 1 Motors and Generators. It covers alternating-current squirrel-cage motors up to and including the ratings built in frames corresponding to the continuous open-type ratings, and incorporates references to the most recent NEMA MG1 edition.
General Specification for Consultants, Industrial and Municipal: NEMA Premium Efficiency Electric Motors (600 Volts or Less) outlines the minimum requirements for three-phase AC induction motors applied to municipal and industrial applications for operation on voltages 600 V or less, rated 500 hp or less, operating more than 2000 hours per year at >75% of full-load.
According to Roger Daugherty, chairman of the 1 MG Technical Committee that publishes these documents, the Condensed MG1 and the General Specification have been updated to include changes made in MG1 in the recent years. This includes efficiency levels for 50 Hz NEMA Premium Efficiency Electric Motors in the Condensed MG1.
