Rosslyn, VA, October 29, 2007 -- The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published NEMA EM 1-2007 Exit Sign Visibility Testing Requirements for Safety and Energy Efficiency. This standard contains energy-efficiency requirements and test methods for declaration of exit sign performance as a NEMA Premium. All safety and efficiency requirements must be met for this rating.
The function of an exit sign is twofold -- readability and attracting attention in an emergency. Visibility requirements, which are based on normal acuity and color recognition, include exit signs intended for use near the floor and comply with the National Electrical Code® and the Life Safety Code®.
