Time constraints in the logging industry are one of the biggest obstacles that contractors face. Just ask Sylvain Provost, owner of PTR Enterprise in Fort Nelson, British Columbia.
“Most of our equipment runs for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F),” says Provost. “And remember, we only have a relatively small window of opportunity to get the job done – 100 days really is not that long when compared to the amount of work that has to get done.”
The Requirements
Protection and performance were key factors in selecting the right products. Provost was in need of a multigrade heavy duty engine oil (HDEO) that could combat soot thickening and sludge formation as well as a grease that could protect against vibration and shock loading. Extending engine and component life was also on Provost’s list of requirements.
The Solutions
Just as he’s been doing for the past 10 years, Provost looked to Petro-Canada to provide him with tangible savings solutions. Through his local distributor, Dall Contracting, he was able to find Duron 15W-40 – an HDEO that exceeds industry requirements for severely turbocharged, delayed injection and cooled EGR designs for pre-’07 engines.
He was also very happy to find Precision Synthetic Moly – a grease that is compounded with 3% Molybdenum disulphide and provides excellent protection over a wide range of operating temperatures.
The Results
“Most of the original pins and bushings are still in place and I attribute that to Precision Synthetic Moly and our maintenance programs,” says Provost.
“The first skidder we ever bought was in 1996 – brand new. After 23,000 hours most of the original pins were still in place and still looked new. Before the switch to Petro-Canada’s Precision Synthetic Moly most of my skidder pins were being replaced after around 10,000 hours.”
Duron 15W-40 is used in most of PTR Enterprise’s equipment. “I believe that Duron 15W-40 is helping to extend the life of my equipment. For instance, I have some trucks with between 17,000 and 23,000 of operating hours on them – that’s a lot of hours. Again, I attribute this prolonged engine life to Duron 15W-40 and our maintenance programs.”
