IEEE Approves New Power Standards for Adjustable-Speed Drives and Harmonic Filters

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Standards Board approved two new power generation standards in 2003, one for adjustable-speed drives, IEEE 958™, and the other for harmonic filters, IEEE 1531™. It also approved a revised standard for how solar radiation affects outdoor metal-enclosed switchgear, IEEE C37.24™.

IEEE 958, Guide for Application of AC Adjustable-Speed Drives on 2,400 to 13,800 Volt Auxiliary Systems in Electric Power Generating Stations, is a new standard on the operation, selection, and use of adjustable-speed drives (ASD) for motor-driven systems. It reviews ASD terminology, theory of operation and selection, as well as drive system classification, typical applications, and ASD design, specifications, and installation.

IEEE 1531, Guide for Application and Specification of Harmonic Filters, is the first standard developed specifically for harmonic filters. It provides guidelines for the use and specification of passive shunt harmonic filters operating in 50 and 60 HZ power systems at 216 volts or more. It also includes criteria for designing, controlling, and protecting these filters.

The revised standard, IEEE C37.24, Guide for Evaluating the Effect of Solar Radiation on Outdoor Metal-Enclosed Switchgear, looks at how the sun affects outdoor metal-enclosed switchgear, control switchboards, and metal-enclosed bus. The thermal effects of solar radiation, which vary with geography and time, are a factor in defining how much current outdoor metal-enclosed switchgear can carry.

The IEEE also reaffirmed the continuing use of four existing standards:

  • IEEE 620™, Guide for the Presentation of Thermal Limit Curves for Squirrel Cage Induction Machines

  • IEEE 1082™, Guide for Incorporating Human Action Reliability Analysis for Nuclear Power Generating Stations

  • IEEE C37.20.6™, Standard for 4.76 kV to 38 kV Rated Grounding and Testing Devices Used in Enclosures

  • IEEE C37.18™, Standard Enclosed Field Discharge Circuit Beakers for Rotating Electric Machinery.

All of the above standards were sponsored by the IEEE Power Engineering Society.
