ABB Inc has released its next generation of ultrasonic level monitors and controls. The new FieldIT™ DATUM ultrasonic level monitoring and control instruments expand the ABB instrumentation line to include latest-technology devices.
The FieldIT DATUM ultrasonic level measurement products provide non-contacting, maintenance-free level control and indication of liquids and solids. They use the reliable ultrasonic time of flight through air technique. These versatile systems can be used in a wide variety of measurement situations, offering advanced measurement and control routines such as conversion of flow to volume and preprogrammed tank characterizations. The relay alarm points are easy to set and ensure optimal control versatility. All the devices are competitively priced; with virtually no routine maintenance required, they provide extremely low cost of ownership. They are ideal for use in chemical, petrochemical, food, pharmaceutical, quarrying, power generation, and plastics, plus municipal water and wastewater treatment.
The instruments use the latest echo ranging ultrasonic technology and many include advanced sonic processing, which discriminates between a true echo signal from the material versus false echoes from acoustical or electrical noise, agitator blades in motion in the vessel, and other obstacles. The sensors -- either built in or connected up to 1200 ft away -- feature a very narrow angle of view: only 10º. This means that many of the new FieldIT DATUM instruments can be used in narrow vessels and flumes and are immune from the effects of baffles, uneven sidewalls, and other obstructions that interfere with other ultrasonic devices. Since the narrow beam signals have outstanding focus, they penetrate gasses, vapors, fuming, and foams that might cause inaccurate readings with other ultrasonic units.
The new units include:
- FieldIT DATUM UI1000 -- an economical level measurement system for general industrial applications that includes the capability for alarming and volumetric calculations.
- FieldIT DATUM UI1500 -- ideal for both pump and level control. It can directly control up to five pumps with the capability to vary pump duty and standby cycles. As well as the standard strategies, there are also time-based strategies to exercise the pumps, allow pump run-on, and delay start/stop.
- FieldIT DATUM OCF5000 -- a state-of-the-art ultrasonic open channel flow metering and control system with datalogging and sophisticated functions for a complete range of flumes and weirs and, when coupled with a velocity sensor, the flow through any open channel can be measured.
- FieldIT DATUM SCU500 -- a basic, self-contained compact 2- or 3-wire loop-powered level measurement system with built in sensor, for simple measurement of level of liquids or solids.
