emConnect(SM) Services are now available from emWare, Inc, provider of remote device management solutions. These enterprise-level services can send, collect, prioritize, and transfer secure information to and from large populations of intelligent devices that are located anywhere in the world. emConnect Services offer a simple, scalable, and cost-effective approach to remotely managing devices that carry high support costs or for which downtime means big customer losses, such as HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) equipment, commercial beverage dispensers, medical devices, industrial pumps, or factory-floor machines. emConnect Services and their associated emWare technologies offer companies and systems integrators a complete remote device management infrastructure that helps reduce service costs while simultaneously increasing customer satisfaction.
"Now, more than ever, companies are demanding accurate, secure and easy-to-access information about their products that are located in remote locations," said Richard Baxter, sr. vp Global Design Services for SMTC Corporation, a provider of electronics design, prototyping, manufacturing, and testing services to OEMs worldwide. "Using emWare's emConnect Services has opened new business opportunities for us and has provided our customers with a simple, straightforward, and secure method for managing their remote devices. emConnect Services removes the complexity behind remote device management and greatly simplifies the way our customers access and manage their critical device information in a way that has never been possible before."
At the heart of emConnect Services is emWare's Enterprise Messaging Gateway (EMG™), which is based on emWare's patent-pending, Embedded Micro Internetworking Technology (EMIT®) device networking software. The EMG is a Java-based, enterprise-level message-routing, directory and database system that supports such industry standards as HTTPS, J2EE, and L2TP (PPP). The EMG can be hosted by emWare, your company, or a third-party applications service provider (ASP). Using standards-based networking hardware and software makes the EMG flexible, stable, secure, and fault tolerant.
emConnect Services can also be integrated with popular ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) systems to help bridge the gap between the intelligent devices that perform key business functions and a company's enterprise system. Using emConnect Services, companies can extend their existing business infrastructures to include remote device monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.
In addition to handling the exchange of device messages, emConnect Services offer services including the following:
- Messaging Service: allows intelligent devices to send and receive messages via emConnect Services to and from client applications or other devices.
- Security Service: ensures that exchange of device information is encrypted and authenticated from the device through emConnect Services all the way to the client applications.
- Registry Service: augments the security service by allowing only registered devices to be recognized by the EMG.
- "Shoulder Tap" Service: offers another security feature to eliminate potential access by unauthorized persons. The EMG executes a "wake-up" call to a device, which then signals the device to contact the EMG. The device does not reply to the call: instead, it then initiates a secure, authenticated, pre-defined dialup session with the EMG.
- "Watchdog" Service: provides a mechanism for programming devices to report at regularly-scheduled intervals. If emConnect Services doesn't receive a message at the appointed time, an alarm message is sent out via email or page to a technician or the appropriate personnel.
