Construction Company Digs New Asset Management System

One of the largest heavy equipment-based construction firms in the U.S., R.E. Pierson Construction Co. has implemented the Asset4000 fixed asset management system to streamline the depreciation, tracking, reporting and maintenance of its nearly 1,500 assets, which include bulldozers, dump trucks, backhoes, pickups, and other heavy equipment.

Pierson’s services include asphalt and concrete paving and production, structural and concrete construction (retaining and sound walls, dams and bridges), demolition and the production of sand, gravel, and stone. In addition to residential development and multiple local, state, and federal highway projects across the Northeast, the company was part of the team selected to demolish the Sands Casino Hotel in October 2007, the first-ever controlled casino demolition in Atlantic City.

Asset4000 is part of a suite of asset-focused accounting, tracking, maintenance management, transport, and logistics software from Real Asset Management International. The management team at Pierson switched to Asset4000 after realizing the asset management module in its general accounting package wasn’t meeting their needs. “The depreciation module was extremely limited in capabilities and its standard reporting features weren’t flexible enough,” said Pierson’s controller, Darin Tuch.

“Asset4000 is really an ideal system for us, providing a central database for depreciation and advanced reporting with plenty of customization,” he added. “I need to produce various reports on a regular basis but the old system had no formatting options, leaving me with no way to split the data the way I needed it.” When seeking a specialized system, the company also looked at another asset management solution, but found it limited in customization and other key features.

“Security was a key factor for us,” Tuch said. “The other solution provided either read only or complete access. But with Asset4000, I can control users’ access and editing capabilities and allow them to do what they need to do without overstepping any boundaries. Plus, Asset4000 has many other capabilities that set it apart. I’m anxious to begin taking advantage of all it has to offer.”

With the limitations of the old system, including poor asset categories and field customization, Tuch said he had to use spreadsheets (one for trucks, one for equipment, etc.) as a supplement. The Asset4000 system gives the company a comprehensive, centralized system to store and manage all details relating to its fixed assets, and offers hundreds of standard reports and provides the ability to produce user-defined reports with its built-in report writer.

Pierson will implement and train its staff on Asset4000 this spring, and Tuch said he looks forward to the time savings and organization it will bring to the fixed asset management process. “RAMI has a great team, they’re thorough and accommodating and really a pleasure to do business with.”
