Boosting Loss Prevention in Retail

Electronic article surveillance (EAS) systems, which alert retailers when shoplifters try to take stolen items through electronic sensors at exit doors or checkout lanes, are widely implemented by retail businesses nowadays as their basic security measure to combat inventory shrinkage or loss of sales. To ensure loss prevention is carried out with maximum effectiveness and efficiency and to reinforce overall security of retail businesses, GeoVision is collaborating with EAS system providers by integrating EAS systems with its powerful video surveillance and management solutions. GeoVision Inc manufactures intelligent video surveillance systems.

Instead of receiving only alarm signals or short alert notifications, retailers, through EAS/GeoVision solution integration, can view live video footages at particular exit door areas when an EAS alarm is triggered. Video for the exit door areas is also automatically recorded and, using smart search and easy playback features, the recorded videos can be retrieved from the view log list according to EAS alarm times for further analysis or investigation.

Moreover, through the use of portable PDAs or cell phones, video footages can be viewed at a remote location when an EAS alarm is invoked. This facilitates a quicker response by retailers or relevant authorities to potential shoplifting situations and permits immediate corrective measures.

Security tags on the goods also facilitate investigation and collection of evidence when a potential theft situation arises. As stolen goods pass through EAS sensors, the EAS system not only invokes the alarm but also identifies the product based on the information in the tag, and in turn retrieves recorded video from the cameras closest to the shelves from which products were taken. Through EAS/GeoVision solution integration, retailers can expect to expedite shoplifting investigation and reduce costs.

Besides powerful video analytic features such as facial detection, missing object detection, and scene change detection, retailers can also use special features such as automatic people counting to analyze store traffic patterns at exit door areas, and generate statistical graphs and data reports for data mining and marketing research analysis. In addition, GeoVision video surveillance and management solutions can seamlessly integrate with other systems, such as point-of-sale, which enables investigators to overlay transaction data on video footage; and central monitoring, which enables retailers to monitor all their stores from one point of control, 24/7.

GeoVision is currently working with two major EAS system providers to jointly promote the integrated solutions for retail businesses in various regions, including convenience chain stores, books and entertainment, apparel, cosmetics, computers and electronics, pharmacy and drugs, liquor stores, supermarkets/grocery stores, auto parts stores, and more..
