Electrically driven Self-Piercing Rivet assembly system sets up to 60 rivets/min, joining steel, aluminum, and composite materials up to 9 mm thick. Fastener drives rivets through top layer and expands radially into lower sheet without puncturing it to form interlock. Fiber optic controls measure sheet thickness and rivet lengths and automatically establish setting force. Dual drum feeders hold 40,000 rivets. Monitor displays process parameters and tolerances and stores data on 500 tasks.

System can form joints in 1.5 seconds, with spindle moving at 96 mm/sec. Servo motor control allows partial retract of spindle to lower cycle time. Setting tool can be mounted on automated robot, fixed automation, or manually operated.
